Hi, my name is Kayleigh and I have been attending Girl Diva for over 2 years.
I come from quite a small town in Hertfordshire so before I joined the group I didn't know anyone else who was openly gay. I wasn't really out to anyone and it would not be an understatement to say I felt very lonely and isolated.
Through a website I found out about GirlDiva and decided I had to try to go. I was terrified as I was still questioning my sexuality and I wasn't really sure if this was the right place for me. I arranged a one2one with the senior youth worker - I needn't have worried because she put me at complete ease and reassured me that it was ok to be unsure of my sexuality and that Girl Diva was the perfect place to work out that stuff and that the group members were friendly and I would be welcomed. So along I went. And I love it! I have made so many friends here and been given so much support and advice from the youth workers.
They can help with anything - housing, employment, education, self esteem, family issues it's not all about sexuality. Though of course I have gained a good knowledge of sexual health and sexuality issues from attending group workshops. I feel a strong sense of identity now and comfortable with being part of the LGBTQ community. I have learned I don't necessarily have to identify as gay or bisexual I don't need a label; I can be my own cool sexuality! I have got to do so many things I wouldn't have if it were not for the groups fun activities - rock climbing, ice skating, residential, even a photo shoot! I have had so much fun here.
It sounds very overdramatic but Girl Diva has changed my life. I am now a Peer Mentor for the group and feel very passionately about LGBTQ youth groups for young people. I think it's very important to have a safe space to meet others your own age, going through similar things. New members are always welcome so come and check us out!
